USB flash drives get their name because they use flash memory to store data. They are portable data storage devices integrated with a USB interface that have replaced the floppy drive. Unlike the floppy drive they are remarkably rugged and can hold huge amounts of data.
Simply plug them into a computer's USB port and they act exactly like a hard drive. In Windows Explorer they typically show as a "letter" drive. If your hard drive is "C" and your CD drive is "D" a Flash Drive will show up as "E" of higher. The letter assigned to it depends on which USB slot that the Flash Drive was plugged into.
A typical Flash Drive - the quarter provides an idea of its size.
A 2 gigabyte Flash Drive is a good choice for genealogy and should be available in the $20-$30 range although they are sometimes found in the $5 range after a rebate. If you want to carry all your genealogy files, including pictures and documentation and even your genealogy program around with you you might want to move to a 4 gigabyte drive which should be less than double the cost of a 2 gigabyte drive.
