ORGANIZING GENEALOGICAL DOCUMENTATION
ELECTRONICALLY

SOME CONCLUDING COMMENTS

Here are some concluding thoughts in no particular order.

  • Does this concept of filing documentation work? It does for me. I've been using it for many, many years and I'm still surprised how easy it is to locate and review documentation that was made decades ago.
  • Is this electronic documentation storage going to work as well. I hope so. I have only been using it for some months and so far it has exceeded my expectation.
  • The biggest benefit has been having past documentation available when on a research trip. Having genealogy files along is old hat. First we had family group sheets in a notebook and then we moved to computer genealogy files (and had to make paper copies until laptops came along). Now we can move documentation along the same path as our genealogy files.
  • Many people simply use the default folders provided in their genealogy program rather than specifying a specific folder. Having all your files in one location makes burning them to a disk a breeze - and that is how we are going to keep updated copies of our material in our children's hands.
  • Using cameras to copy documentation is apparently much more widespread that I had thought. I was recently in a excellent Historical Library in Pennsylvania and the librarian mentioned that their photocopying revenue has dropped significantly due to people using their cameras instead of the library's photocopying services.
  • I take a lot of tombstone pictures. Rather than considering them "sources" to be filed I usually add them as a picture to the person's record. While I do cite them as a source there is no location included unless they are not included in the person's record.
  • Don't forget to backup. With your documentation on the computer you need a good backup routine. I recommend that you periodically burn a CD and put it in your safety deposit box or some other, off site, location.
